A 2023 study out of Washington University in St. Louis, backed by NIDA and a few other NIH institutes, found shared genetic markers across several different substance use disorders. The findings pointed back to dopamine regulation as a common thread running through multiple addictions (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2023). So can addiction be genetic in a way that crosses over between substances, rather than being locked to just one? Increasingly, the research says yes — and that cross-substance risk shows up locally, too. LA County treatment data shows methamphetamine accounts for roughly 30% of admissions, alcohol close behind at 27%, and heroin and prescription opioids together making up another 31%, which tracks with the idea that shared genetic pathways can raise vulnerability across more than one substance at once.

A genome-wide meta-analysis published through the National Center for Biotechnology Information found several gene variants tied to addiction risk, but each one only had a modest effect on its own, with odds ratios landing mostly in a moderate range rather than acting like some genetic on/off switch (Li et al., 2011).

None of them, alone, has ever been shown to cause addiction by itself.
