Meet Jessica, Our Content Writer!
My name is Jessica Downs and I currently serve as the Primary Counselor and Admissions Counselor at House of Life. I earned my bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Chemistry from Nova Southeastern University in 2004, graduating with honors. Since 2003, I have worked in the mental health field supporting individuals struggling with severe and persistent mental health disorders, co-occurring conditions, complex trauma, and substance use disorders.
I was drawn to this field because mental health and addiction are often deeply misunderstood and heavily stigmatized. Too often, individuals struggling with these conditions are viewed through the lens of moral failure rather than compassion, understanding, and evidence-based care. I have always believed that people suffering from mental health and substance use disorders deserve dignity, empathy, advocacy, and access to effective treatment.
My passion for this work became even more personal after facing my own struggles with substance use disorder. Experiencing the life-changing impact of compassionate, effective treatment and finding meaningful long-term recovery profoundly transformed my life and reignited my dedication to helping others heal. Recovery not only affects the individual—it impacts families, loved ones, children, and entire support systems. I have witnessed firsthand both the devastation addiction can cause and the incredible healing and transformation that recovery can bring.
At House of Life, I work closely with clients through individual counseling sessions, psychoeducational groups, process groups, family counseling sessions, case management support, and recovery planning. What I love most about my role is the opportunity to give back what was so freely given to me and to connect with clients on a deeper level through shared lived experience, compassion, and genuine understanding. It is deeply rewarding to witness clients rediscover themselves, rebuild relationships, develop self-worth, and grow into healthier versions of themselves throughout their recovery journeys.
One of the things that makes House of Life truly unique is our intimate six-bed treatment setting located within the peaceful and serene landscape of Simi Valley. Our smaller environment allows us to provide highly individualized and personalized care where every client can feel genuinely seen, heard, valued, and supported. We place strong emphasis on treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—and our program incorporates holistic approaches including mindfulness, exercise, yoga, nutrition, connection with nature, spirituality, emotional wellness, and healthy lifestyle development.
My therapeutic approach is collaborative, compassionate, inclusive, and deeply grounded in trauma-informed, client-centered care. I integrate evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), mindfulness-based practices, 12-step principles, holistic recovery approaches, and wellness-focused interventions that support both physical and mental health. I also incorporate spirituality into my work because I believe spiritual growth and connection can serve as a powerful foundation for healing and lasting transformation, just as it has in my own recovery journey.
Beyond my work as a counselor, I am also a mother of two young boys, a sponsor to women in recovery, and a writer passionate about topics related to addiction, trauma, counseling techniques, mental health, and long-term recovery. My goal in writing is to offer the perspective of someone who has not only studied addiction professionally, but has also lived through it personally and found healing, purpose, and fulfillment in recovery. I hope to help normalize the experiences of those struggling, reduce shame and stigma, provide meaningful insight, and most importantly, offer hope to individuals and families who may feel overwhelmed or alone.
When clients and their loved ones walk through the doors at House of Life, my goal is for them to feel safe, supported, understood, and never judged. Recovery is difficult, but no one should have to face it alone. If there is one thing I hope people take away from learning about me, it is that I am a passionate, compassionate, and nonjudgmental advocate who genuinely cares about helping others heal and reclaim their lives.
